PRTD - PR Travel Document
Permanent residents need a PR card or travel document to travel to Canada. Permanent residents (PR) of Canada need a valid PR card when: traveling to Canada by public transit (plane, train, bus or boat) transiting through a Canadian airport If your PR card is expired or you lost it, you can apply for a PR travel document (PRTD) to travel to Canada.
A Permanent Resident Travel Document (PRTD) is a travel document that allows permanent residents of Canada to re-enter Canada if they are outside of the country and do not have a valid Permanent Resident (PR) card or if their PR card is expired.
A PRTD can be used by a permanent resident to travel to Canada by commercial transportation, such as by airplane, boat or train. It is not necessary to have a PRTD if you are traveling by car or bus from the United States.
To apply for a PRTD, you must complete an application form and provide supporting documents, such as a copy of your expired or lost PR card, proof of your permanent resident status, and proof of your travel plans. You will also need to pay a fee for the application.
It is important to note that a PRTD is not a replacement for a PR card, and you should apply for a new PR card as soon as possible if yours is expired, lost, stolen or damaged.
In exceptional circumstances, if you cannot meet the residency obligation, you may still be able to keep your permanent resident status if you can show that there were exceptional circumstances or factors beyond your control that kept you from living in Canada, where H&C would be a consideration and our Immigration Consultant can help you for that.
